A quick couple of paragraphs to talk about living by what is most important – Values & standards
First-things-first do you have values? What i mean is do you or your company have a list of the things that mean the most to you? If you don’t, I would highly recommend you write these down, now it can be as little as a few lines, but by writing them down you can start understanding how your values enable you to make correct decisions time and time again.
For example, if you highlight integrity and accountability as two of your personal values, then you know that your decisions should never oppose these basic standards.
Living by your values can be as small as not stepping over a piece of rubbish when you walk down the street. The act of picking that discarded ‘chocolate wrapper; up and correctly disposing of it shows both of these mentioned values.
Integrity – to do the right thing. After all, if we all turned a blind eye to ‘trivial’ things then one day soon your eyes will be overwhelmed by the trivial build-up. And do it when no one can see, we don’t always have to tell the world.
Accountability – Knowing what is right and acting on it. Don’t wait for someone else to do it first, be someone who takes responsibility, in this case the local community and the environment.
Now if you elevate the decision that needs to be made put apply the same simple rules things will become clear.
Live by your values and you will make the right decision for what you stand for.
